A Little History of Cuba
Hey . . . Were Famous!
Where is Cuba, Kansas?
History of Cuba
Cuba Kansas was founded and names on March 23rd of 1886. The immigrants were mostly farmers and small town merchants. The naming of the town is somewhat obscure, historical noes relate that a man passing through the community stopped for a few days to make traveling money. This, widely traveled had been to such places as the island of Cuba. He felt the people of this new town and community were friendly and hard working like those he had met on the island, thus he began to call the town Cuba. The name seemed to stick and remains Cuba, Kansas.
The town of Cuba has had three locations throughout the years. The original settlement consisted of a post office (established in 1868) and a school located 2 1/2 miles North and 3 miles east of present day Cuba. Cuba was moved one more time after that to where the current town thrives. In the late 1800's the rail line was the lifeblood of the Midwest and Cuba was relocated to stay on the path of the train.
Many early settlers to the area were Czech immigrants from Bohemia that settled in the mid 1870's. Originally the majority of the population of Cuba were of Czech and Austrian decent. Cuba still holds a very rich Czech heritage, you can still find Old Recipe Czech Bologna and Jaternice at the local grocery store, hear polka music on main street and find a delicious Kolache in town.
The Adopted Son of Cuba
A special "Thank You" goes out to a great friend of the town and former Republic County resident Jim Richardson for putting Cuba in the National Spotlight on more than one occasion. Jim has been documenting Cuba in the beauty of black and white for well over 30 years. With his passion for seeing through a dying small town and finding a town full of life and prosperity Jim has landed Cuba in the National Geographic Magazine in May of 2004 and featured Cuba on the TV show CBS Sunday Morning in 1983 and again in May of 2004. Cuba has also been featured in numerous photography magazines and in the book "A Day in the Life of America".
"People in Cuba have a habit of making things happen!"
- Jim Richardson
Cuba and its Surroundings
Cuba, Kansas is nestled among the rolling hills of North Central Kansas just a few miles south of the Nebraska state line. Beautiful farm land surrounds Cuba as early Czech immigrants found it to their liking. The local farmers produce excellent grains, hay beef and pork for the American public.

Czech Stone Carving
As a gift to Cuba, Glen Lojka, a Cuba native who now resides in Manhattan created a stone carving. The stone is 7 ft 8 in tall, 5 ft 2 in wide, 18 in deep and weighs over 8,000 lbs.
This carving is a tribute to a typical Czech immigrant family of the late 1800's that was just unloaded at a train station in a new world.
Glenn started the project in the summer of 2004 and completed it in May of 2005. A dedication ceremony was held on July 16th, 2005 during the Harvest Festival and the stone carving is now on permanant display on Cuba Main Street.
One Room School Museum
On the East side of Main Street in Cuba sits a little white building that houses the Cuba Rural One Room School Museum. The museum hosts artifacts and items from the days gone by of one room rural school houses from the Cuba area. The building its self was once a one room school from Cuba.

Along with the continuous rocking around the clock, the activities during the week include a full slate of entertainment and activities that include area talent such as singers, dancers and entertainers.
Each day of the week special meals are cooked for lunch and dinner by the ladies of Cuba. Traditional Czech meals are featured on the menu that includes fried chicken, soups, lasagna and more.
Proceeds from the week long Rock-A-Thon are used for community projects. The Annual Rock-A-Thon is held each March at the Community Hall on Main Street.
